Sony’s PlayStation Network went down for 24 hours over the weekend, causing many gamers to fear a repeat of the infamous 2011 hack that compromised the personal details of more than 70 million customers.

However, it appears a malicious intrusion was not the root cause, but rather an “operational issue” was behind the disruption.

Sony has said it will give PlayStation Plus members five days’ of free membership for their trouble.

“Network services have fully recovered from an operational issue. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience,” Sony said in a post on X.

“All PlayStation Plus members will automatically receive an additional five days of service.”

However, gamers have responded angrily to the offer, especially those who are not signed up to PlayStation Plus but were still impacted by the weekend’s outage.

Others have demanded Sony be more transparent about the nature of the “operational issue”, while even more have expressed disappointment in Sony’s attempt at compensation.

The 2011 cyber incident that gamers were so worried about took the PlayStation Network service offline for 23 days, with the outage beginning on 20 April following an intrusion between 17 and 19 April. Sony took a week to reveal the scope of the incident, earning the ire of gamers and politicians alike.

Around 77 million Sony customers had their usernames, physical and email addresses, dates of birth, passwords, and financial details exposed following the incident.
