The Guardian Media Group, of which Guardian Australia is a part, has announced a content-sharing partnership with OpenAI.

Under the deal – announced by both parties on 15 February – original and archived content will be available within ChatGPT as a source of news.

In addition, article summaries and extracts will be available within the generative AI (GenAI) platform. At the same time, The Guardian will roll out ChatGPT internally to “develop new products, features and tools”.

Under The Guardian’s AI policy, any use of GenAI will be overseen by a human in the loop and only used “for the benefit of its readers, its business and its wider mission”.

“This new partnership with OpenAI reflects the intellectual property rights and value associated with our award-winning journalism, expanding our reach and impact to new audiences and innovative platform services,” Keith Underwood, chief financial and operating officer at the Guardian Media Group, said in a statement.

Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer at OpenAI, added that the partnership was part of the company’s “goal of supporting world-class journalism” and that it “enriches the ChatGPT experience by providing access to relevant, real-time news content”.

“It’s part of our overall strategy to help publishers and audiences benefit from advanced AI technology,” Lightcap said.
