Telstra has confirmed reports of a data breach impacting 30,000 current and former employees.

The dataset, uploaded to the dark web, includes first/last names and email addresses from 2017.

According to Telstra, the cyber attack has not breached any of its own systems, but has instead targeted a third party.

This comes less than two weeks after Optus alerted its customers of a security breach.

Optus had first announced the data of about 9.8 million Australians was compromised in the large-scale breach last Thursday.

The alleged hacking group announced it would release the information unless paid a US$1 million (AU$1.53 million) ransom on a well-known data breach forum.

Compromised data included 14,900 valid Medicare ID numbers, with 22,000 numbers believed to have expired.

Optus opened an investigation alongside the Australian Federal Police, Australian Signals Directorate, and Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
