Ex-NSW MP Victor Dominello is carrying around his passport today, and he’s not happy about it.
In a post on LinkedIn, Dominello – who recently took up a role leading the University of Sydney’s new Trustworthy Digital Society Hub – explained that he was not about to travel abroad, but rather he needed his passport to verify his identity.
Apparently, a “financial institution” needs both his passport as ID (we assume Dominello has a driver’s licence) specifically and for it to be witnessed by a justice of the peace. It’s more than a few hoops to jump through, and Dominello thinks it’s all a bit much.
“I have to find a photocopier,” he wrote in his post. “I used to (about six years ago) have one of those fax/scanner/copiers at home. They used to break down every year or so and the ink cartridges were quite expensive … now I just use my smartphone to send docs.”
He also needs to “find a JP – who are amazing generous volunteers ?? but I still have to take time out of the day to find and sign”.
Apart from the time this all takes up, Dominello is also concerned about the amount of data it generates.
“I hope this financial institution is super cyber safe – as they are creating a rich PDF identity honey pot,” he said.
But Dominello does see good news on the horizon, and it’s not just from his work in the area. In the same post, he praises the work of one of his former staffers, Jordan Hatch, who is currently working with the “Feds and driving reform to modernise commonwealth statutory declarations”.
Hatch is currently working at the regulatory reform division of the Department of Finance.
Dominello took up his new role at UTS in May, saying he wanted to “help create a world where individuals and communities can fully benefit from the opportunities of the digital age without sacrificing their privacy, security, or fundamental rights”.
