X’s AI training methods are currently being investigated by Canada’s privacy watchdog for potentially breaching privacy legislation.
In a statement published on Thursday (27 February), the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada said it was investigating whether X’s use and disclosure of the personal data of Canadians breached the nation’s privacy legislation.
“The investigation, as required by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), will examine whether X is meeting its obligations under the act,” said the office.
“The investigation will focus on the platform’s compliance with federal privacy law with respect to its collection, use, and disclosure of Canadians’ personal information to train artificial intelligence models.”
The office added that as this is an active investigation, it is not in a position to provide further comment on the matter.
According to a report by Reuters, Brian Masse, a lawmaker for the opposition New Democratic Party, claimed to have written to the privacy commissioner requesting an investigation.
“I’m pleased to see the privacy commissioner agree to launch an investigation into X’s use of Canadians’ data,” Masse said in a statement.
“Transparency and sunlight are crucial at a time when algorithms could be manipulated to spread misinformation.”
X has yet to acknowledge the investigation publicly.
Tensions between Canada and the US are currently at a peak, with new US President Donald Trump placing 25 per cent tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico starting 4 March.
Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), has quickly become Trump’s right-hand man and was appointed the head of the unofficial government agency, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has been tasked with removing agencies it deems are a waste of time and money.
Additionally, X has just released its latest AI model, Grok-3. While currently only available to premium users, it promises increased capabilities over Grok-2 and claims to have greater reasoning capabilities than even OpenAI’s ChatGPT o3 mini.
Grok-3 mini was also launched and is able to answer queries faster at the expense of accuracy.
