Australia and the Philippines signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the aim of increasing cooperation between the two nations when it comes to cyber security.

The memorandum was signed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and President Ferdinand Marcos jnr following the latter’s address to the Australian Parliament on 29 February.

The memorandum states that the two countries will work together to share information on cyber security and critical infrastructure challenges and build capacity for best practices when it comes to incident response management between the private and public sectors. The countries will also work together on threat assessments and share lessons learnt from significant events.

The memorandum is also aimed at growing the two nations’ digital economies and building stronger links between government, private sector, academic and research institutions when it comes to cyber security research.

Australia and the Philippines have also committed to working together to implement “agreed norms of responsible state behaviour” while honouring international agreements on cyber crime.

“The Philippines is one of Australia’s key partners in south-east Asia – we share a vision for an open, stable and prosperous region,” Prime Minister Albanese said in a statement.

“Our nations have never been closer, and realising opportunities through our strategic partnership will bring great benefits to Australians and Filipinos.

“I look forward to continued discussions with President Marcos at the ASEAN-Australia Summit.”

At the same time, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) signed a separate MOU with its Filipino counterpart, the Philippine Competition Commission. This MOU focuses on enhancing cooperation when it comes to competition law in both the two signatory countries and the wider ASEAN region.

“We welcome this new commitment and the opportunity it provides the ACCC to work even more closely with its counterpart in the Philippines,” said ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb in a second statement.

“This latest achievement is proof of the close and productive connection shared between our two competition regulators and marks the ACCC and the PCC’s next step in our joint effort to champion competition and consumer welfare.”
