The Philippines is set to benefit from a new cyber uplift program that will be launched in partnership with Australia.
The two nations are looking to bolster the south-east Asian country’s cyber defences with a “cyber boot program” that will increase local awareness of how to prepare best for cyber attacks and deal with them when they do occur.
Speaking with Filipino media outlet ABS-CBN News, research director of the Australian Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre Professor Helge Janicke said the program would “impart technical skills on how to gear up for cyber attacks”.
“We are looking at awareness programs, war gaming exercises. It is mainly about organisations and companies understanding better what these threats are and how to respond appropriately,” he said.
The program comes after Australia and the Philippines signed a memorandum of understanding on Cyber and Critical Technology Cooperation in February.
The memorandum was signed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and President Ferdinand Marcos jnr following the latter’s address to the Australian Parliament on 29 February.
The memorandum states that the two countries will work together to share information on cyber security and critical infrastructure challenges and build capacity for best practices when it comes to incident response management between the private and public sectors. The countries will also work together on threat assessments and share lessons from significant events.
The memorandum is also aimed at growing the two nations’ digital economies and building stronger links between government, private sector, academic and research institutions when it comes to cyber security research.
Australia and the Philippines have also committed to working together to implement “agreed norms of responsible state behaviour” while honouring international agreements on cyber crime.
“The Philippines is one of Australia’s key partners in south-east Asia – we share a vision for an open, stable and prosperous region,” Prime Minister Albanese said in a statement.
“Our nations have never been closer, and realising opportunities through our strategic partnership will bring great benefits to Australians and Filipinos.
“I look forward to continued discussions with President Marcos at the ASEAN-Australia Summit.”
