Melbourne-based blockchain technology firm ShareRing has announced it has joined the Australian government’s age assurance and online verification technology trial in the lead-up to legislation coming into effect later in the year to ban the use of social media by children under 16.

Testing of ShareRing’s self-sovereign digital identity solution with school students in Darwin will start next week.

ShareRing’s solution takes advantage of reusable digital IDs without repetitive verification methods.

“We are proud to lead this crucial initiative to protect young Australians online via robust age verification, and shape a safer digital future,” Tim Bos, ShareRing’s founder and chief technology officer, said in a statement.

“Our participation confirms that our self-sovereign identity technology not only meets but exceeds the stringent security requirements for age verification.

“With scalability, trustless verification, and privacy at its core, ShareRing’s solution ensures personal data remains secure and fully under individual control.

“This trial marks a significant step toward establishing a reliable, reusable digital ID framework to support the next generation of secure digital interactions across Australia and beyond.

ShareRing joins San Francisco-based Incode Technologies, which participated in the age verification trial last month. Incode claims its technology can estimate a user’s age in seconds via a “biometric selfie” with a true positive rate of 99.87 per cent.
