The cyber security firm has announced an upgrade to its email threat detection tool.
Cyber security firm Barracuda has rolled out a redesigned version of its Barracuda Email Threat Scanner — a tool used to help businesses detect email threats that pass the email gateway, which include spear phishing, business email compromise, conversation hijacking and services impersonation.
Each of the tool’s scans provide a report on attacks found inside the environment, as well as at-risk domains and employees, designed to help organisations identify gaps in existing security protocols.
The revamped tool provides users with a complete user interface update to the scanner’s dashboard, including:
According to Barracuda, 4,550 organisations used the software in 2020 to scan 2,600,531 unique mailboxes, finding 2,029,413 unique attacks.
On average, 512 attacks were found per organisation, and one out of seven mailboxes (14 per cent) containing at least one attack currently sitting inside.
Of the 2,029,413 unique attacks detected, phishing was the most common threat overlooked by the organisations’ email security solutions (59 per cent), following by scamming (39 per cent), extortion (9 per cent) and business email compromise (8 per cent).
“Spear phishing threats are more dangerous than ever due to the sophistication of attackers, and while organisations have invested in protection against email threats, many of these attacks slip through gateways, landing in users’ inboxes,” Don MacLennan, SVP, engineering and product management, email protection at Barracuda, said.
“As these numbers show, traditional email gateways are not enough. Customers should also use API-based inbox defences to maximise their protection.”
Troy Radloff, general manager of Queensland-based Alliance Business Technologies, added, “Using Barracuda Email Threat Scanner we’ve helped our customers uncover serious threats hiding in their Office 365 environment in a fast, free, and safe way.
“Not only does this make our customers more secure, but it helps us show the value of the solutions we offer them.”
