A cyber attack on Australian energy and software provider Energy One has seen corporate systems in Australia and the UK affected.
The company is responsible for supplying energy trading software and services to wholesale energy, carbon trading and environmental markets worldwide. The company said it “has become a new global force in the renewable energy transition, thanks to the development of innovative solutions to help serve that market”.
Serving customers across Australia, the UK, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, the company’s solutions are designed to assist customers in managing risk when trading on the wholesale energy market.
On 18 August, Energy One identified a cyber attack had affected corporate systems in Australia and the UK.
In a release issued to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), the company said it was quick to respond, contacting relevant authorities in both Australia and the UK.
“In response, Energy One took immediate steps to limit the impact of the incident, engaged cyber security specialists, CyberCX, and alerted the Australian Cyber Security Centre and certain UK authorities.
“Energy One’s top priorities are the safety and security of its people, its customers, and its systems.
“Analysis is underway to identify which, if any, additional systems may have been affected by the attack,” it said.
To prevent further spread of the incident, Energy One has disabled some of the links between corporate and customer-facing systems as it continues its investigation.
The company said it is currently unsure if any personal information or customer-facing systems have been affected, and it has made it a key responsibility of the investigation to determine if they remain secure and, if not, what was affected.
The company also hopes to identify what went wrong and the initial point of entry.
Very little is known regarding the incident outside of what has been shared in the ASX release. However, Energy One has said it will provide updates when it finds out more.
“Energy One will continue to provide updated information as it gains greater clarity about the incident and the likely time frame for its resolution,” it said.
More to come.
