Somebody at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has both a sense of humour and a keen interest in Australia’s indie game development scene, as evidenced by the name of a new security tool the agency released overnight.
The tool is designed to let security specialists monitor various Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 environments for malicious activity, and it has the curious name of Untitled Goose Tool.
While CISA has not said as much, we’re quite sure this is a reference to the popular Australian-made video game, Untitled Goose Game, where players take on the role of an angry goose trying to thwart the plans of the residents of an unsuspecting village.
(I can assure you, this is a sentence I did not expect to write when I got to work this morning.)
The tool lets users review sign-in and audit logs, query and export software configs, extract cloud artefacts, and make use of various time-bounding functions.
“Network defenders attempting to interrogate a large M365 tenant via the UAL may find that manually gathering all events at once is not feasible,” CISA’s team said in the tool’s fact sheet. “Untitled Goose Tool uses novel data gathering methods via bespoke mechanisms.”
We can only respect whoever designed the tool’s commitment to all things goose-related, as even its commands are appropriately themed. Various functions can be triggered by the commands “goosey graze” or “goosey honk”, for instance.
