Scammers are impersonating Aussie brands such as Ted Baker and Veja Shoes alongside international brands like Dr Martens and Carhartt.
Security researchers have uncovered more than 4,000 fake online retailers preying upon shoppers looking for a post-Christmas bargain.
The sites are set up to harvest user credentials and even financial information and credit card details and use logos belonging to popular fashion brands. Australian names such as Ted Baker, Veja Shoes and Merrell Shoes all feature among the scam sites, as do global brands like Carhartt, Dr Martens, Max Mara, Mulberry, Samsonite, and Skims.
Stephen Kho, cyber security expert for Avast, feels that the sales season is a veritable “feeding ground” for scammers.
“Exciting deals can cloud our judgement, especially during this shopping event,” Kho said in a statement. “It is a timely reminder to remain educated about the warning signs of scams and to put good cyber safety practices into play.”
“Last year saw a record number of scams, and with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI), they are growing in number and sophistication. Aided by the new technology, fake online storefronts, dodgy social media ads, marketplace swindlers, and bargain-themed phishing attempts will run rampant this holiday season, so it is important Australians are equipped with the tools and knowledge to avoid any personal or financial harm.”
