A Western Sydney-based organisation has been hit for the second time this year by a different actor using the same form of attack.
The Wentworthville-based Indian Support Centre was hit by the RipperSec threat group, a malicious actor that has been busy in recent weeks and is known mostly for targeting government or infrastructure sites, with a tendency to target those to support Israel.
The Malaysian “hacktivist” group launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the Indian Support Centre and posted proof of the hack to its Telegram but said little else about the attack, other than providing a link to the organisation’s website.
Cyber Daily observed that the website was operating as normal on the day of the attack (2 April), with no further issues observed today (3 April).
The Indian Support Centre was founded in 2015 as a non-profit to assist people within the Indian sub-continent (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) migrating to Australia.
This is the second time the group has been hit just this year, having been targeted in a DDoS attack by a group called the Nixon Cyber Team.
The threat group, which appears to have ties to Anonymous Bangladesh, launched a DDoS attack and a defacement attack on the group’s website. However, the website had no lasting effects.
Both RipperSec and Anonymous Bangladesh have also launched attacks on Israel-based targets this year, with the former launching a DDoS attack on the Ministry to Israel website the same day as it did the Indian Support Centre, while the latter attacked the Australian embassy to Israel on 22 January, within days of its Indian Support Centre attack.
Cyber Daily has contacted the Indian Support Centre for comment on the latest attack but received no response. This story will be updated if new information comes to light.
