The big four bank says that it has since begun restoring systems.
An outage affecting ANZ’s app and mobile banking has left Australians all over the country without the ability to access their accounts.
Outage reports first appeared at roughly 11:30am this morning (Tuesday, 21 May), peaking at roughly 1pm, with just over 3,000 reports.
The number of people affected is expected to be much higher, with some media outlets claiming “millions” of Australians were affected. Cyber Daily has been unable to verify this number.
Around that time, ANZ announced on X (formerly Twitter) that it was aware of the issue and was working to resolve it.
“We’re investigating an issue affecting some customers accessing the ANZ App and internet banking,” it wrote.
“We’re working to resolve this as soon as possible and apologise for the inconvenience.
“The ANZ Plus app, phone banking, ATMs and EFTPOS facilities continue to be available.”

Since then, ANZ has provided an update, saying that it was “investigating a technology issue relating to a third party vendor” that prevented access to some systems, including internet banking, the ANZ App and ANZ Transactive Global, the latter two of which have begun to come back online.
“We continue our work to resolve this as soon as possible and apologise for the inconvenience,” ANZ said.
“The ANZ Plus app, Phone Banking, ATMs and EFTPOS facilities continue to be available.”
The third-party vendor was not named. The bank also made no comment to indicate whether or not the incident was a cyber attack, which, if so, may have affected the third party.
As reported by The Daily Mail UK, a number of ANZ customer were left stranded by the outage and took to social media to express their situations.
“I’m trying to pay for wheel alignment so my son can pick his car up. Bet you don’t cover loss of wages as he can’t get to work,” said one individual.
“Locked out of every dollar that’s tied up at ANZ right now, hope your media release goes better [than] the Optus data breach did,” said another.
This is the second ANZ outage in less than a year, with the bank’s ATMs, branch computers and card transactions down late in 2023.
The bank said its services were offline on 29 September between 1:30pm and 5pm due to a “system malfunction.”
