The largest childcare provider in the state of Victoria has disclosed a cyber attack on its systems that led to the exfiltration of customer data.
In a notification to staff, Guardian Childcare Victoria revealed that a threat actor had breached its systems and stolen identification documents that were submitted when students were first enrolled.
“Following an extensive investigation of the incident, we have become aware that a scanned image of the ID document you provided at the time of your visit may have been compromised by the attacker,” said the email to those affected.
The childcare organisation said that besides this, no other data was compromised.
Guardian Childcare has advised relevant authorities of the incident and has begun bolstering its security to prevent future breaches.
The organisation also advised those affected to request replacement identification and stay vigilant against scams.
While Cyber Daily has not observed any evidence as of yet that the data has been used for malicious means, ID documents are used for verification purposes, and thus are a useful tool for scammers and threat actors looking to commit fraud.
Cyber Daily has reached out to Guardian Childcare Victoria, which has forwarded the request to its media team. Cyber Daily will provide an update on this developing story as more becomes known.
