Australian Payments Plus announced today that ANZ’s ANZ Plus customers will now have access to its ConnectID digital identity solution.

ConnectID lets individuals verify their identity without having to share an onerous amount of personal information. Instead, they can ask a business to verify their identity with a trusted source – such as a bank.

This keeps people’s data safe from spreading from company to company. ConnectID never sees the data – it merely verifies it with the bank in question and then verifies it with the company in question.

Gabriel Steele, ANZ general manager of customer and identity services, said ANZ was pleased to help its customers control their identity.

“Not only do we see this better protecting our customers from the evolving threat of cyber crime, but we believe there’s an equally significant opportunity to reduce the risk our business customers face in holding more data than required,” Steele said in a statement.

“In partnership with ConnectID, we are excited to provide ANZ Plus customers with the choice to use a secure, convenient method to verify their identity with a growing list of approved merchants. We look forward to shaping the network to provide even greater customer value.”

ConnectID managing director Andrew Black said he is “delighted to have ANZ Plus go live with ConnectID”.

“Its customers will enjoy greater control over what personal data is shared with and used by a business. ConnectID also ensures consumer and business convenience and confidence, with fast and secure identity verification.

“AP+ is excited to welcome ANZ Plus on this journey, leveraging the benefits of ConnectID to deliver greater functionality and security for customers and businesses in Australia.”

Both the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and the National Australia Bank signed up for ConnectID in October 2023, with Westpac saying, at the time, it was preparing to support the scheme.
