NSW Police have warned Sydneysiders to be aware of a new scam phone call campaign where the perpetrators are posing as members of the police force.

The scammers request the personal details of their victims after informing them they’ve fallen victim to some form of scam or fraud, which the “police” are investigating.

The police have received “numerous” reports from members of the community after receiving the scam calls and are investigating the source of the scam calls.

NSW Police used the scam campaign to point out some basic precautions to avoid being scammed.

• If you receive a threatening call or one demanding money, immediately hang up.

• Never disclose personal details over the phone.

• Never provide banking details over the phone.

• Never provide your banking PIN or passwords to anyone.

• Do not make any payments to the caller via any means.

• If you are suspicious about the veracity of a caller, question them. If they avoid answering, hang up.

• Be aware: scammers use scripts to create a high-pressure situation to make a rash decision.

• Contact your bank or financial institution immediately if you believe you have fallen victim to a financial scam.

• Contact police immediately to report the incident.

“Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au,” NSW Police said in a statement. “Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.”

If you have been the victim of a scam, you can report it to the local police or the ACCC online at the “SCAMwatch report a scam” page or by calling 1300 795 995.
