The Meow ransomware gang has allegedly hacked a New Zealand VoIP and IT support company.

Banx posted the details of the hack on its darknet leak site on 6 August, saying: “We are excited to present you with an exclusive data pack containing over 15 GB of confidential information from Banx Systems, an IT services firm based in Auckland, New Zealand.”

The leak post went on to use the company’s own copy to describe Banx’s business, before claiming that the data includes client information, financial documents, and “other confidential data”.

“These records provide deep insights into the company’s operations and client interactions, potentially drawing significant interest from media, competitors, and other stakeholders,” a Meow spokesperson said.

“Don’t miss out on the opportunity to uncover the hidden details within this comprehensive 15 GB data pack from Banx Systems!”

The data is being sold at two price points – one buyer can purchase the information outright for US$35,000, or Meow will sell to multiple people for US$12,000.

Meow also shared nine documents allegedly stolen during the attack, though none appear to belong to Banx specifically. One document, for instance, is a daily sales report belonging to a New Zealand bathroom supplier and features a list of its clients in Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere in the world. Another belongs to an Australian waste management supplier, while another refers to an Auckland hearing aid supplier.

Also included in the proof-of-hack documents is a scan of a New Zealand driver’s license.

Banx describes itself as a “VoIP and technology specialist with more than 20 years in the industry and a friendly but focused attitude towards customers and their needs”. The company’s IT services include website hosting, backup solutions, including cloud backup, e-waste collection, hardware and software sales, and general IT support.

Banx did not respond to Cyber Daily’s request for comment.

The Meow operation first appeared in November 2023, and this is the gang’s first attack in the ANZ region. It has already claimed seven victims in August alone, and 53 victims in total. In July Meow claimed a hack on US tech giant Hewlett Packard.

This is the fifth ransomware attack on a New Zealand business in the last three months.
