Cyber security firm Palo Alto Networks hosted its first Cyber Safe Kids Family Workshop in Sydney over the weekend, inviting families and their kids along to learn about the importance of personal cyber security.

The free workshops – hosted by Michelle Yao and Nina Bual, co-founders of online safety organisation Cyberlite – hosted parents and children aged between seven and 12 and covered key areas of security, such as how to identify and avoid phishing, address cyber bullying, and the importance of online privacy and strong passwords.

“Everyone should have the skills needed to thrive in our increasingly digital world while remaining safe,” Lisa Sim, vice president of marketing, JAPAC, at Palo Alto Networks, said in a statement.

“By equipping the next generation with the tools for navigating the digital world confidently and safely, we can collectively foster a more secure digital environment for everyone.”

World champion snowboarder and Olympic medalist Scotty James also attended the event, sharing his experiences with cyber security in his roles as an entrepreneur and philanthropist.

“Like most athletes, I use social media to connect with my fans all over the world. When I’m on the road competing, it’s a great way to stay in touch with my family and friends,” James said.

“It’s so important that we help people, especially kids, understand that social media also has its challenges. By educating kids on online safety, we can teach them the skills to be confident and secure when using it.”
