The Commonwealth Bank of Australia has said it plans to double the number of free educational seminars it runs in regional Australia to educate its customers about scams and fraud.

CommBank plans to run 400 in-person seminars nationwide over the next 12 months.

The Staying Safe Online seminars are designed to help consumers identify scams and other forms of banking fraud. They will be run in both regional bank branches and a range of other venues, including community centres and clubs.

The seminars run for one hour and, in addition to teaching attendees how to spot and avoid scams, will also cover common tactics used by cyber criminals and how to keep personal information safe and secure.

“CBA has a strong commitment to regional Australia. As the bank with the largest branch network in the country, we can leverage our scale to help more regional Australians stay safe online, and by partnering with other regional service providers, we can multiply this impact,” Mark Jones, executive general manager of customer service network, said in a statement.

“We are doubling the number of free Staying Safe Online seminars in the regions to more than one a day, and we will deliver them not just in our branches but in a wider range of venues so we can help more Australians safely navigate today’s increasingly digitised world.”
