Scammers pose as the Australian Cyber Security Centre to spread malicious software.
The Australian Signals Directorate’s (ASD) Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has warned of cyber criminals posing as the ACSC.
The scammers are spoofing the email address and using ASD and ACSC logos in the campaign, though the content and subject lines of the messages show some variation.
Some of the emails warn their recipients that complaints have been filed against their IP address or email, while others more broadly warn of a rise in “cyber threats”. Regardless of the nature of the warning, the emails recommended that readers click on a link in the email to download antivirus software.
However, the link is malicious, and the ASD’s ACSC believes clicking on the link could lead to malware being downloaded.
“ASD’s ACSC is monitoring the situation and is able to provide assistance and advice as required,” the ASD’s alert, emailed to subscribers late on 28 August, said.
“Organisations or individuals that have been impacted or require assistance can contact us via 1300 CYBER1 (1300 292 371).”
The new scam campaign could well have been timed to take place during National Anti Scam Week, when many organisations, such as banks, are communicating with customers regarding scam detection and protection.
