The Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus has responded to claims made by the RansomHub ransomware gang following a ransomware attack last month.

A spokesperson for Swinburne Australia confirmed the incident on 2 September after the gang listed the campus as a victim on its dark web leak site on 30 August, but now, Swinburne Sarawak has provided Cyber Daily with its own comment.

“Swinburne Sarawak is currently responding to a cyber security incident. Immediate action was taken to contain the incident, and relevant government authorities in Malaysia were notified within 24 hours,” a Swinburne Sarawak spokesperson said.

“Swinburne Sarawak is an international branch campus operated in partnership between Swinburne University of Technology Australia and the Sarawak government.

“Swinburne Sarawak’s IT systems are independent of Swinburne’s systems in Australia, and Swinburne’s Australian campuses are not impacted by this incident.”

RansomHub said it had stolen 366 gigabytes of data from Swinburne Sarawak and posted several documents to prove the hack – a letter of completion to a student, an advanced standing application, bank details, a blank form, and a scan of the passport of a Malaysian former student.

Swinburne Melbourne said on Monday that it was assisting its overseas campus.

“Swinburne Sarawak is responding to a cyber security incident, there is no impact to Swinburne’s Australian campuses,” the spokesperson told Cyber Daily.

“We are providing support to Swinburne Sarawak as they continue their investigations into the incident.”

Swinburne Sarawak currently has a population of 4,000 students from 60 countries.
