The Feilding-based New Zealand accounting firm Advanced Accounting has confirmed it was the victim of a recent ransomware attack.

Ransomware newcomer Sarcoma listed the company on its darknet leak site on 10 October, claiming to have stolen 115 gigabytes of data.

No ransom demand has been listed by Sarcoma; however, the gang is threatening to publish the data within 13 days.

Sarcoma has already published a raft of documents as evidence of the hack, including scans of passports and driver’s licences, as well as financial documents.

Advanced Accounting has said it is aware of the incident, and a spokesperson told Cyber Daily that “we are mortified this has happened and doing our very best to get everything resolved”.

Advanced Accounting is one of four victims from the ANZ region listed by Sarcoma. The gang only appeared recently, posting details of 30 victims on its darknet leak site, with more than five gigabytes of data stolen between them.

In Australia, The Plastic Bag Company and Perfection Fresh – both Sydney-based – were listed as victims, alongside a third company, which Cyber Daily is still investigating.

Little is known about Sarcoma itself, but here’s how the gang describes itself on its onion site.

“Today, more and more information is stored on digital media. Companies that store sensitive information on their servers must take a responsible attitude to security,” Sarcoma said on its About Us page.

“Our mission is to show the world how important it is to keep data safe. If you see your company on our website, it means that security was low.

“We invite access brokers, interested parties, aggrieved employees of companies to co-operate. Together we can be stronger and richer.

“We know how to make our cooperation profitable and safe.”
