Italy’s largest football club, Juventus FC, has confirmed that an unauthorised user gained access to its English X (formerly Twitter) account and made a number of posts, including a fake player announcement.
On Monday (21 October), the @juventusfcfen X account announced that Turkish footballer Arda Güler would be joining Juventus. He currently plays for Real Madrid.
“Welcome to Juventus, Arda Güler! The rising star of football is now part of the #Juventus family,” the post said.
“Ready to make history together on this new journey,” the tweet continued, accompanied by emojis of the Turkish flag and a football.
A number of tweets written in Turkish were also posted by the account.
On its main, Italian language X account, Juventus FC quickly confirmed that the posts were fake and that the English account had been taken over by unauthorised users.
“Our Juventus English account has been compromised. Please ignore the false information being published on this account. We are working on the issue,” Juventus wrote on its main X account @juventusfc.
Il nostro account inglese è stato hackerato. Si prega di ignorare le false informazioni pubblicate su @juventusfcen. Stiamo lavorando per risolvere il problema.
