Threat actor claims to have a small amount of stolen data from its fifth Australian victim in a matter of weeks.
The Sarcoma ransomware gang has claimed to have successfully hacked another Australian business, this time, the Victorian firm ADT Freight Services.
The gang listed ADT Freight Services on 14 November; however, Sarcoma seems to have gotten away with little in the way of digital loot.
According to the gang’s post on its darknet leak site, only two gigabytes of data were stolen, and only SQL files at that. As a rule, Sarcoma likes to post sample data to prove the veracity of its hacking claims, but in this case, the gang hasn’t shared anything.
No ransom amount is listed, but a countdown suggests that the data – what there is of it – will be published in just over 10 days.
So far, ADT Freight Services has declined to respond to Cyber Daily’s requests for comment on the incident.
According to Matt Green, cyber security firm Rapid7’s principal threat analyst, Sarcoma has well and truly gotten the attention of security researchers.
“The Sarcoma ransomware group emerged in October 2024, rapidly gaining attention with the public posting of multiple victims on its leak site,” Green told Cyber Daily.
“These postings placed Sarcoma in the top 10 most active actors for the month.
“Sarcoma employs a double-extortion strategy, combining ransomware encryption with data exfiltration to pressure organisations into paying ransom.”
Where Sarcoma is operating from remains a mystery. Security analysts Cyber Daily has spoken to currently believe the gang is based somewhere in eastern Europe and that Sarcoma may have links to another, pre-existing group operating in the same region.
ADT Freight Services operates out of Tullamarine in Victoria and offers import and export services, freight forwarding and vehicle transport services, and customs and quarantine services.
Sarcoma’s most recent Australian victim was Wollongong-based office furniture supplier Micon Office National.
