The ASD’s ACSC has issued an alert warning Australians to be aware of scam emails and calls pretending to be from the ASD’s ACSC.
The Australian Signals Directorate’s (ASD) Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has circulated an alert warning of scammers impersonating the ACSC.
The emails feature the ACSC’s logo and signature block and ask victims to share personal details, transfer money, or download software.
Scammers are also using phone calls in their impersonation campaigns.
“The scam emails and phone calls also create a sense of urgency to try and pressure you into doing something quickly,” the ACSC sent out on the afternoon of 3 February.
“Often, this will include threats that if you do not act now, something terrible will happen.”
To protect consumers and businesses from scammers, the ACSC has released a list of actions it will never take, via either email or phone.
The ACSC will:
“A real ASD’s ACSC employee will always encourage you to hang up and call 1300 CYBER1 to confirm you are speaking to us,” the ACSC said.
The ACSC is asking anyone who received a scam email or phone call in its name to contact the ASD and then report the scam to ScamWatch before blocking the sender and number.
