The group announced it had exfiltrated data that could “destroy” the FBI and dedicated it as a birthday present to the FBI’s new director, Kash Patel.

“Dear Kash Patel! I wish you Happy Birthday,” wrote leader of the group LockBitSupp.

“I also congratulate you on your position as the ninth director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and wish you professional success, because it will be not easy for you.”

Alongside the listing, LockBitSupp requested Patel reach out, offering him a birthday file as a “personal gift”.

The file is password-protected and its contents are currently unknown. However, LockBitSupp said it is “an archive of classified information” that “is for the benefit of the National Security of the United States of America, information for you on how to find the TRUTH, which our brother US President Donald Trump also wants to find”.

Based on media reports, the file is a parent directory containing over 250 file folders dated 29 May 2024 and listed in alphabetical order.

“You are surrounded by liars, professional manipulators, respected Kash Patel. The so-called ‘agents’ who are under your supervision are tricky manipulators and the whole point of their manipulation is to do nothing, but you have to do something about it, Mr. Kash Patel,” added LockBitSupp.

“I have been called ‘extortionist’ and ‘blackmailer’ a lot, but I am a worthy son of the American Fatherland, a son of immigrants like you, dear Kash Patel! God bless our Motherland! My whole life, like your life is filled with concern for National Security.

“This information is the key against LIES, the cure against FAKES.

“Please contact me personally, I am so reluctant to publish this information that could not only negatively affect the reputation of the FBI, but destroy it as a STRUCTURE.”

This is the second time LockBit has sent an FBI director a birthday gift of allegedly exfiltrated data.

In December, a user named Fox William Mulder (in reference to the fictional FBI agent from the X-Files TV series) wrote a sarcastically heartfelt message to former FBI director Christopher Asher Wray, wishing him a happy birthday.

“Friends! Today is a significant day! It’s the FBI Director’s Birthday,” said the user.

“Dear Christopher Asher Ray [sic]. On this wonderful day, I want to sincerely congratulate you on your birthday and wish you all the best. May your life always be wonderful and full of good moments, for example, how you caught me or at least learned my identity.

“May your memories be only bright and good, for example, how your employees deceived you and said that they supposedly found me. May you be surrounded by people who will help you rise even higher, although where else can you go higher?

“May your work be easy and beloved, and your salary – high and desirable, like mine. May your eyes always shine as they do now, may your money never end, and may all your dreams come true as quickly as you wish.”

Once again, the archive was password-protected and inaccessible.
