In a statement by WSU vice-chancellor and president, Professor Barney Glover AO, published on the university website, there is currently “no evidence of any Western Sydney University information, including personal information, being accessed or compromised in any way”.

“Whilst we appreciate this investigation interrupted business operations, taking our student management system offline for a brief period has been an important, preventative measure,” he said.

According to the university, the student management system, the Ellucian Banner system, which was launched at the university in 2021, was taken down as a security precaution.

No details as of yet have been released of what “suspicious activity” was detected, but the university has since put its student management system back online.

“Western Sydney University takes our digital security and the protection of our student and staff data incredibly seriously. Our success in taking preventative measures is testament to the university’s advancing cyber security detection and response capacity,” said the university.

“This event is a timely reminder of how important it is to remain constantly alert and vigilant to cyber security threats.”

The university is currently working with government and industry, as well as students and staff, to ensure business operations continue and systems and data remain uncompromised.
