The threat actors, who appeared to be located in Vietnam based on the language used, logged in to the Australian publication’s Facebook page before changing the profile picture and sharing a number of posts.

One of the posts shared was a list of what appeared to be AOL emails and passwords, with the original poster captioning the post with “AOL @@”.

Not long after the breach, Sky News Australia appeared to retake control of its Facebook page, restoring its profile picture and deleting all shared posts.

Cyber Security Connect reached out to Sky News Australia for information regarding the incident, to which it received a response from a spokesperson.

“The Sky News Australia Facebook page was briefly compromised with the issue resolved promptly. Further investigations are underway,” a Sky News spokesperson told Cyber Security Connect.

Not much is currently known outside of the activity on the Facebook page, but the list of what appears to be emails and passwords from AOL users posted directly on a social media page on the clear web suggests a major breach.

It is currently unknown whether the emails are connected to Sky News Australia itself or if the page was purely used as a stage to present the data.

More to come.
