Websites belonging to Canadian military and government agencies have been hit by India based hackers, resulting in outages according to new reports.
The group reportedly behind the attack, ‘Indian Cyber Force’, was quick to claim the attack, posting screenshots on X (formerly Twitter) showing that both the Canadian Air Force website and the Canadian Elections and Democracy sites were both offline, on the 28th and 27th of September respectively.

The attack on the air force site lasted a total of 2 hours, whilst the election and democracy site was down for an hour, according to Indian Cyber Force.
Prior to the attacks, Indian Cyber Force issued a warning telling Canada to “get ready to feel the power of IndianCyberForce attacks.”
It also posted a list of “Deface Targets” on its Telegram, including ‘Bristol Dental’ and ‘Hear Clear Canada’.
The hacks come at a time of tension between the two nations, with Canada accusing India of being involved in the killing of Canadian Sikh leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, on Canadian soil. These accusations have been refuted by India.
"As I said on Monday, there are credible reasons to believe that agents of the government of India were involved in the killing of a Canadian on Canadian soil," said Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was a leader of the Khalistani movement, a separatist group looking to establish a Sikh homeland called Khalistan in the north of the Punjab region of India. Designated a terrorist by India in 2020, he was killed in June.
Indian Cyber Force has commented on the hack, saying it has “no hates for Canada or its people,” but that it is highly against the allegations.
“We just noticed how recently Canada government throw some allegations on India without any vaild reference.
“We are against all the Khalistani Terrorists. It's a humble request to Canada government to take care of your mother land, focus.”
The group also added that Canada was promoting anti-Indian activity, damaging its image in India and supporting Khalistani “terrorists.”
The group also claimed the hack of the Khalistan election website, with the hashtag #F***Khalistani, a similar one to those used with the Canada hacks.
Unlike most threat actors, Indian Cyber Force doesn’t claim to be a hacking group, but a “Cyber Defence Team” that is both non-governmental and non-profit.
It also says that it doesn’t support or involve itself in any illegal activity, but defends its country against cyber-attacks.
