Australian music retail giant Billy Hyde Music has allegedly had some of its customer database leaked on the clear web.
Through FalconFeeds, Cyber Daily observed that the attack occurred last Friday (1 December) and has resulted in customer data being leaked on BreachForums. Details include customer name, phone number, email, address, and postcode.
The data was posted by a forum user by the name of Alerander, who claimed to have a 3.66-megabyte CSV file containing the data. A sample of the data was posted as proof of the breach.
Alerander’s posts indicate that the breach was not the result of a ransomware incident, but they do appear to be selling the data, with another user saying, “another good leak, I won’t pass it by, I downloaded it.”
Billy Hyde has yet to disclose any information regarding the breach.
Cyber Daily has reached out to Billy Hyde for further information regarding the breach and has requested comment.
Alongside Billy Hyde, Alerander has posted major databases on BreachForums in the past, having listed and alleged 250,000 US social security numbers and bank numbers earlier this year, as well as data belonging to French car manufacturer Renault.
At this stage, it is unknown if the user is part of a larger threat group; however, most users posting data in this way usually work solo.
Billy Hyde is arguably the most famous name in Australian music retail, having opened its first store in 1962 by the Australian drummer of the same name.
In 2010, the company merged with Allans Music to become the largest music retailer in the country. However, only two years later and 50 years after its inception, Billy Hyde was forced into receivership, closing the majority of its stores.
The company now runs only two stores, with locations around Victoria and Adelaide.
