The University of Wollongong (UOW) has confirmed a cyber incident affecting its systems that has likely resulted in data being accessed by unauthorised users.
The university said that the attack was detected and contained on 7 December but that both students and staff were affected.
In a statement sent to Cyber Daily, the university has said that the incident is now contained and that investigations are ongoing.
“The University of Wollongong (UOW) has identified a cyber security incident within our systems,” the statement read.
“The incident was detected and contained yesterday, and it is likely that data was accessed.
“We are working to investigate the cause and extent of the issue. Our normal operations are continuing as we assess any potential further impact.”
It is currently unknown what data was likely accessed nor how much. There are also no details regarding the nature of the attack, including how the threat actors gained access or what their motives were, such as financial gain through a ransomware attack.
“We are committed to keeping staff and students updated and informed as this situation develops.
“The university has also engaged external experts to support the effort and is liaising with the relevant regulators and authorities.
“We will provide updates as the situation evolves,” the university said.
