Nearly half of UK voters would pick an AI over Rishi Sunak

As the votes are counted in the UK general election, artificial intelligence appears to be a better choice to lead the country for many Brits.

As the United Kingdom waits to see not so much who its next Prime Minister is, but rather how much of a landslide goes to Labour, many voters have said they would prefer to have artificial intelligence (AI) in charge rather than Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives.

Pollsters at generative AI engineering firm AIPRM spoke to 2,000 voters from around the UK, presenting them with a choice between two anonymous party manifestos. One was the Conservative Party’s set of election promises, while the second was generated by ChatGPT.

Surprisingly – or perhaps not, given the absolute shellacking that the Tories are likely to receive – most people preferred the AI manifesto, with the rest either picking the Conservative Party promises or simply being unsure which to pick.

Across the country, 49 per cent of voters picked the AI over Sunak’s pledges, with 35-44- and 16-24-year-old brackets being even more bullish on AI, with 53 and 52 per cent picking the ChatGPT-generated campaign pledges over the Conservative Party’s.

Only 23 per cent picked the Conservative Party manifesto, and everyone else couldn’t make a choice between the two.

“The survey raises profound questions about the future of political leadership and the role AI might play in shaping policy and public trust,” said AIPRM’s Christoph C Cemper in a statement. “With respondents being unaware that the manifesto they preferred was generated by AI, it signifies a shift in how people evaluate political platforms – favouring content and ideas over the source or personality behind them.”

“The fact that only 23 per cent of people preferred Rishi Sunak’s Conservative manifesto over the AI-generated one, without knowing it was crafted by AI, suggests a growing discontent with traditional political rhetoric. It shows that voters are looking for fresh, data-driven solutions that may resonate more effectively with their concerns and aspirations.

“As AI becomes more integrated into political processes, it will be essential to ensure that these technologies are used responsibly and ethically, maintaining the human element that is vital for genuine engagement.”
