Cyber security company Trend Micro has announced new capabilities designed to protect companies and enterprises from deepfakes and AI-assisted fraud.

The Trend Micro Deepfake Inspector – available today for free – can analyse behavioural elements to detect deepfakes, even during a live video call. In addition, the platform also uses more traditional techniques such as colour detection and noise analysis.

“Australia, like the rest of the world, has seen a surge in deepfakes in recent years due to the growing accessibility of AI. For Australian businesses, these threats can pose significant risks to potentially undermine trust, security and brand integrity,” Mick McCluney, ANZ field chief technology officer at Trend Micro, said.

“Our latest research reveals several new deepfake tools that make it easy for cyber criminals at all skill levels to launch damaging scams, social engineering, and security bypass attempts.”

According to Trend Micro’s research, not only has there been a “dramatic” increase in the range of AI tools available to cyber criminals, but they’ve also become more accessible and affordable.

Tim Falinski, vice president of consumer business for Trend Micro AMEA, noted that deepfakes are nonetheless being used to support traditional scamming methods.

“While deepfakes are a new twist, they exploit the age-old tactics of scams and fraud and are becoming increasingly effective – putting Australia at risk. We found that 62 per cent of people are concerned about deepfake scams – and with good reason,” Falinski said.

“From romance scams to HR recruiting scams and even grandparent scams, we’ve found that cyber criminals are pushing the limits of deception. Our new Deepfake Inspector is designed to protect Australians by detecting AI-powered impersonations and avoid potentially harmful or costly deceptions.”

Trend Micro’s research also found that more than a third of people had already been faced with a deepfake-powered scam and that the technology was also being used to bypass biometric security.

The Deepfake Inspector will also be available on the Trend Vision One platform shortly.

Australians lost more than $134 million to scams in the last six months, according to recent reports from the National Anti-Scam Centre.
