South Korea has announced that it will build the world’s largest AI data centre by capacity as the country aims for the top spot in AI dominance.
The new data centre, which will begin construction in 2025, is expected to boast 3GW of capacity, create roughly 10,000 new jobs and have an initial revenue of US$3.5 billion.
The project will be led by a division of California-based Stock Farm Road (SFR), Fir Hills, and is expected to be valued at over US$10 billion, with a potential for a US$35 billion value.
SFR was co-founded by Dr Amin Badr-El-Din, CEO of BADR Investments based in Jordan, and LG heir Brian Koo.
“This is more than just a technological milestone; it’s a strategic leap forward for Korea’s global technological leadership,” said Badr-El-Din.
“We are incredibly proud to partner with Stock Farm Road and the Jeollanam-do government to build this crucial infrastructure, creating an unprecedented opportunity to build the foundation for next-generation AI.”
The new data centre, which is set to be completed in 2028, intends to prepare for the future and serve millions of people, including major corporations.
For this, it will use highly sophisticated infrastructure featuring advanced cooling, the capability to deal with sudden and significant energy loads and industry-leading fibre bandwidth for both local and global connectivity.
The data centre will be built in the Jeollanam-do province in South Korea, and despite the large energy and water consumption that comes with running a large AI data centre, Koo said that the new data centre could “elevate Korea and the region to a new level of technological advancement and economic prosperity”.
The data centre services market is expected to reach US$438.3 billion by 2023 as a result of massive demand for AI in business.
