Arati Prabhakar, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, made the announcement while attending the DEF CON hacking event in Las Vegas late last week.

“It’s not just the normal process accelerated – it’s just a completely different process,” Prabhakar told reporters. “They know it’s serious, they know what the potential is, and so their departments and agencies are really stepping up.”

“A lot of the dreams that we all had about information technology” have “come true”, Prabhakar said, as reported by Cyberscoop. “But some nightmares have come with that.”

According to Prabhakar, there is a growing realisation of the dangers of AI growth, which is, in turn, instilling a sense of urgency in government circles.

Prabhakar believes there is a unique opportunity at the moment to make the most of AI development.

The word of a Biden-signed executive order comes at the same time as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is leading a series of sessions educating lawmakers on AI technology and its uses.

Last week, the White House announced a DARPA-led AI Cyber Challenge, where researchers use technology from OpenAI, Google, and others to look for vulnerabilities in open-source software, and with prizes in the millions.

“What they come up with, the challenge winners, we definitely look forward to applying across the federal government because we’re looking for ways to accelerate finding and fixing vulnerabilities,” said Anne Neuberger, deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology within the White House, in a press call.
